  • The Sasso della Mantesca (... or Maltesca) is a conglomeration of large allochthonous blocks of metamorphic rocks. As an aspect, it recalls lithotypes of an intrusive nature. To the touch it lasts but, in some points, little cohesive. Geologically, it is part of the ophiolites (from the Greek serpent ofios), rocks which, since time immemorial, were associated with emanations of a diabolical nature (... like the nearby Sasso di San Zenobi).
  • Access: Coming from Bologna, you need to take the SP 7 of Valle dell'Idice. Uphill towards the pass of the Passo della Raticosa, past the villages of Monterenzio, Bisano and San Benedetto del Querceto you arrive at Palazza. Leaving the restaurant La Palazza on the right you arrive at a junction (left) with directions to La Martina (via Casoni di Romagna). The junction is recognizable for the indications of the homonymous camping and for some garbage bins (44.221013,11.352296). Go up to the mentioned location. After the village, after some hairpin bends, we arrive at a wide open space on the ridge between the Valle dell'Idice and that of the Sillaro. The whole route described so far is paved. Here you can leave the vehicles and walk for about 1.2 km. The forest that you follow is also marked with the CAI trail mark 801. This is the well-known Flaminia Minor route which reaches Ozzano in the Emilia from the pass with Tuscany. In about 20 minutes you can see on the right the large blocks that protrude from a dense woodland. Near a passage through the brambles, following the traces, one can access the base of the various blocks.

  • Beauty:
  • Exposure: DIFFERENT EXHIBITIONS PERMIT CLIMBING IN THE MOST MONTHS OF THE YEAR. SOUTH, SOUTH / EAST, SOUTH / WEST
  • Gear: Excellent spit INOX M8 / M10. Several streets offer an open-air stop (Austrianalpin). It is a safe system (CE mark) with very low risk of deterioration (see photo). On some itineraries they have been infused in tandem, so much to be able to use both anchors for the descent.
  • Rock: Ophiolithic serpentinic type. In most cases, the blocks are made up of very coarse-grained gabbro which are interesting for the mineral accessories present.

  • Logistic: WE ARE NOT ADVISED to reduce the approach by taking advantage of the ridge forest road. Very often it is muddy and there are large pools. Moreover, some points are particularly problematic given the presence of protruding stones. Finally, there is NOT a real parking nearby and then, start with the idea of doing a bit 'of comfortable walking. A lithological complex of this kind represents, in our territory, a rarity to be preserved. In the past it was widely exploited to produce gravel road and lithic material for the construction of millstones (... in some places there are still some not completely finished sketches!). When it was explored, with the aim of evaluating its vertical potentials, some itineraries were discovered already in place, which were later put in safety and re-valorized. THE highest discretion is RECOMMENDED. There are no fountains in the area.
